Healing from Toxic Capitalism: Human Design for Time Management and Work Scheduling
When you’re creating a business that divests from harmful capitalist practices like hyperproductivity, Human Design will be a powerful tool to help you create a work schedule that supports your liberatory journey.
Let’s be real, you started your business to get away from toxic capitalism’s corporate culture of working long hours and sacrificing time in your personal life.
If you were socialized as a Women of Color, especially a Black woman, you are probably also healing from the expectation to provide additional unpaid emotional labor to employers and team members.
It can be difficult to let go of the stronghold of that type of work culture once you are free to run your own business.
Divesting from Toxic Work Schedules through Human Design
Human Design can show you how to analyze your energy for work, your creative process, and communication, which all lead back to time management and work scheduling.
Work Energy: The Defined Sacral Center
In Human Design, you can look to your Sacral Energy Center to understand how to make best use of your energy to perform work tasks and create in general.
If your Sacral Center is defined, you will see that it is colored in on your Human Design chart. A defined Sacral Center means you have consistent access to your energy for work and creating. Think of it as having a generator battery that can be a consistent power source until it is shut off or runs out of power.
If you’re a Human Design Generator or Manifesting Generator, you will have a defined Sacral Center.
The important thing for Generators and Manifesting Generators to remember is that you will benefit from activating your powerful Sacral energy with work that satisfies you.
Just because you can do something, that doesn’t mean you should.
Many Generators and Manifesting Generators find it hard to stop working once they’ve started. Unfortunately, this natural ability has often been exploited by a capitalist culture that treats humans as machines, and encourages a sense of pride in workers to be hyperproductive.
To divest from this, you can explore what aspects of your work satisfy you and which do not. Once you identify the work that doesn’t satisfy you, you can begin to explore options for delegating those tasks, eliminating them, or finding a more satisfying method of accomplishing them.
Efficient Work Energy: The Undefined Sacral Center
If you have an undefined Sacral Center, it will not be colored in on your human design chart. Having an undefined Sacral Center means you do not have consistent access to energy for carrying out work. This does not mean that you can’t work or that you are lazy. It simply means that you are meant to work more efficiently
If you are a Human Design Manifestor, Projector, or Reflector, you will have an undefined Sacral Center.
Unfortunately, most people with undefined Sacral Centers have been conditioned and socialized to work as if they have the consistent energy of a defined Sacral Center. This is where we can find the archetype of the “Superwoman who can bring home the bacon and fry it up in the pan,” even though she is always on the verge of burnout and putting others’ needs before her own.
This can also result in someone with an undefined Sacral Center being deeply misaligned with the type of work that they do.
For example, people with undefined Sacral Centers will usually thrive in roles where they can initiate projects, or manage and facilitate others instead of implementing tasks or performing frequent physical labor.
In your own business, you may find it difficult to do this if you are the only person on your team. If this is your circumstance, you will benefit from keeping your daily task list short and taking frequent breaks. You may also prefer to work on short-term projects in your business model.
As you divest from toxic capitalism’s work culture within your own business, part of your healing process may include letting go of the need to do all of the things every day for fear of appearing lazy or being perceived as less than excellent.
Deciding How to Work and When According to Your Human Design
You can refer to your Human Design strategy and authority to guide your decisions on what type of work you do, as well as your work schedule.
This is your business, and you get to make the rules. You are the authority, and you get to make important decisions that affect your day-to-day work energy as well as your company’s culture of work.
You may decide that the typical Monday through Friday, 9AM to 5PM work schedule doesn’t work for you. That may even have been a determining factor for you becoming an entrepreneur.
If you are stuck making these decisions, your Huma Design strategy and authority can help you find clarity.
The Importance of Rest
No matter what your Human Design aura type or Sacral definition may be, you will always benefit from taking time to rest.
Divesting from capitalism within your business means rejecting the need to urgently extract as much as possible from your labor and other resources until your are depleted and exhausted.
To do that, prioritize rest, which is a more holistic and sustainable way to do business.
Rest can look like:
- Creating shorter work days
- Taking more frequent breaks
- Setting boundaries around correspondence
- Detaching emotionally and mentally outside of work hours
Imagine what could be possible for your business and your life without the pressure to be hyperproductive.
