What Are the 9 Energy Centers in Human Design
If you’ve ever seen your Human Design chart, you’ve probably noticed the colorful shapes scattered across the body graph. These shapes are called energy centers, and they’re at the core of how your chart works.
Think of them as your body’s energy hubs or departments. Each energy center governs a different theme of life, from communication to intuition to willpower and emotions. Together, they create the blueprint of how you’re designed to process not only your energy, but the energy from your environment and people you come in contact with.
As we navigate our daily lives, the pressures of capitalism, cultural narratives about success, and social expectations assigned to our intersectional identities, understanding your energy centers can be deeply validating and liberating.
Let’s look at the nine centers one by one so you can begin to recognize your own patterns and possibilities.

Key Terms: Defined and undefined
In Human Design, we refer to energy centers as defined or undefined.
Defined Centers are shapes that are colored in. This means the energy there is consistent and more concrete. It is your energy and can radiate outwards to interact or influence your environment.
Undefined Centers are shapes that are white. This means the energy there is inconsistent or subject to change. Undefined energy centers can take in the energy from the outer world, like an open window.
Head Center: Ideas, Inspiration and Mental Pressure
The Head Center sits at the very top of your chart. It’s the spark of ideas, questions, and inspiration.
Defined: You have a consistent way of generating ideas. Others may feel inspired by your ideas. However, other ideas and inspiration from the outside world may have trouble breaking through to you.
Undefined: You’re more likely to absorb inspiration from others and the world around you. You may feel pressured to pursue every idea. Be mindful of whose ideas you’re listening to, as you may be easily influenced.
Ajna Center: Processing Information and Perception
Just below the Head, the Ajna is all about analysis, opinions, and mental certainty.
Defined: You tend to have a steady point of view and way of thinking, but it can be hard to see things from other people’s perspectives or change your mind once it’s made up. When processing new information, it feel more comfortable to take baby steps instead of trying to see the bigger picture all at once.
Undefined: You can conceptualize beyond “A to B.” It’s more like “A to Z to the 10th power’ in your case. However, you may take in others’ opinions and struggle with indecision or pressure to be certain.
.
Throat Center: Communication and Manifestation
At the center of your chart, the Throat is the hub of communication, expression and manifestation.
Defined: Your voice carries consistency and people notice when you speak. Your words can set things in motion quickly, so be mindful of what you say.
Undefined: You may feel pressure to talk, perform, or be heard. Your words may be received more potently by others when you’re responding to something in your surroundings. Your manifestations may take longer to come to fruition.
G Center: Identity, Love and Direction
In the middle of the chest area, the G Center governs love, identity, and direction in life.
Defined: You carry a steady sense of who you are and where you’re headed. However, if you change course, it can feel like a complete overhaul of your entire identity rather than an agile pivot.
Undefined: You may feel fluid in identity and how you express yourself, or seek external validation about where you belong. Your direction in life may feel like a series of side quests, but your identity is indeed being shaped by your experiences.
Heart (Ego/Will) Center: Willpower, Value and Self-Worth
Small but powerful, the Heart Center is about self-worth, willpower, and commitments.
Defined: You have consistent willpower and pushing through with “gritted teeth and white knuckles” can work for you more than it would for others. You can muster up the drive to compete to the point of running on empty. Remember: everything is not a competition. You have a strong sense of what things are worth, including yourself.
Undefined: You may feel pressure to prove your worth or overcommit to things. Accomplishing achievements is easier when you have a reward at the finish line. You may struggle with feelings of self-worth or determining the value of things.
Solar Plexus: Emotions and Emotional Authority
On the right side of the body graph, the Solar Plexus governs emotional waves and sensitivity.
Defined: Your emotions cycle through you like intense waves, both high and low. When you allow yourself to ride those ways until they have passed, you’ll find clarity in your decisions and situation. The expression “sleep on it” was made just for you.
Undefined: You feel others’ emotions strongly and may confuse them for your own. Creating emotional boundaries is essential for your well-being. Be mindful that you’re not avoiding difficult conversations because you’re afraid of what emotions may come up for those involved. It’s not your job to manage other people’s emotions or put their emotional needs before your own.
Sacral Center: Creative Life Force and Work Energy
In the lower belly, the Sacral is the engine of vitality, creativity, and sustainable work.
Defined: You have consistent access to energy for work and creation (hello Generators and Manifesting Generators). Once you get going, it can be hard to stop until you’re tuckered out, which is why it’s important for you to say no to options that won’t feel like a satisfying outlet for your energy.
Undefined: Your energy isn’t designed for nonstop work and output. You’re here to work or be creative in bursts and have deep cycles of rest in between. Rely on your ability to be efficient and delegate tasks to others. Consistency does not mean ‘constant.’

Spleen: Intuition and Survival Instincts
On the left side of the body graph, the Spleen is about instinct, intuition, and fear of unsafe and unhealthy situations.
Defined: Your intuitive sensing is strong. You can sense when something is healthy and safe or not, even if you can’t explain how you know. If something feels off, you know when it’s time to go. However, you might still linger at the edge just to see what happens. Health concerns or illness may sneak up on you or come out of nowhere.
Undefined: You may stay in jobs, relationships, or environments long after they’ve expired because fear clouds your intuition. This may even cause you to experience physical illness. Be mindful that you’re not being influenced by other people’s fears that they are projecting onto you.
Root: Pressure and Momentum
At the bottom of the chart, the Root is the pressure center, governing stress, timing, and drive.
Defined: You have a steady way of handling pressure and deadlines. You have a strong sense of how long it takes you to do things, and waiting until the last minute may feel comfortable for you. However, you may feel restless and antsy if you’re not busy. Also, you are not peer-pressured easily.
Undefined: You may feel pushed to rush or take on others’ urgency. You may feel like you want to get things done quickly just so you can remove them from your list of obligations. Be mindful of the environments you’re in, because they can make you feel stressed when you don’t have to be.
So… What Do You Do With This Information?
Understanding your energy centers helps you notice where you’re naturally steady, and where you’re more open and influenced by others. Your energy centers can also show you where you’re likely to be energetically drained or blocked.
It’s not about fixing yourself. There’s no “one right way” to be. It’s about recognizing if something feels like it’s draining you or getting in the way of what feels important to you.
That’s why I often remind clients: if you’re having trouble following your Human Design strategy or connecting with the inner wisdom of your Human Design authority, study your energy centers to identify any energetic leaks or blockages.
Final Thoughts
The nine centers in Human Design are like nine windows showing you where you’re open or closed to the energy around you.
Understanding your energy centers can help you navigate work, family, and social situations that often tell us we’re “too much” or “not enough” with intention, discernment and protection.
